In my inaugural HSE course semester, embarked on an exciting project—crafting innovative operator workstations for MALE/HALE UAV systems. Applied HSE principles, explored diverse roles, and presented findings creatively.

Problem statement

In the aftermath of the devastating California forest fires, there is an urgent need for innovative and efficient firefighting solutions to enhance the capabilities of traditional firefighting efforts. The increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires, exacerbated by climate change and urban expansion into wildland areas, pose a significant threat to lives, property, and ecosystems. To address these challenges, there is a compelling need to deploy advanced technologies such as fire-fighting drones to complement and augment the existing firefighting infrastructure in the United States.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION
Integrating advanced fire-fighting drones into the US firefighting infrastructure offers a promising solution. These drones, equipped with firefighting capabilities, can rapidly respond to emerging wildfires, providing real-time data, enhancing situational awareness, and delivering targeted interventions. Their deployment improves safety by minimizing human exposure to hazardous conditions, optimizes resource allocation, and offers a cost-effective, scalable approach to combating wildfires. By leveraging technology for proactive monitoring and swift response, the integration of fire-fighting drones stands as a crucial step towards building a resilient and efficient firefighting system in the face of escalating wildfire threats.

The drone pilot's responsibilities include flight control, navigation, and ensuring safety. They need access to various camera feeds, maps, battery status, and real-time piloting displays. These requirements are met with multiple camera feeds, vision aids, navigation maps, and dedicated displays. Design principles guide display development, ensuring attention, perception, memory, and mental model alignment. Additionally, the display system should provide warnings and instructions for safe drone operation.

The UAV pilot's controls are comprehensive, encompassing a remote controller equipped with a joystick or Remote Control Unit, along with toggle switches and buttons for seamless command execution. The Camera controls are managed through a dedicated spherical control, ensuring precise manipulation. The incorporation of autonomous features further enhances operational capabilities, featuring a route navigation panel for strategic planning, automated flight modes for streamlined execution, and control-display integration for a cohesive and user-friendly experience. This multifaceted control system empowers UAV pilots with the tools needed for efficient, versatile, and sophisticated operation in various scenarios.
